After two long years in Caesarea and three official hearings, Paul finally boards a ship headed Rome. God had promised that he would witness of Christ in Rome just as he had in Jerusalem. It must have been a great moment for Paul to walk the ship’s entry plank and to be on his way to fulfilling the eager desire of his heart recorded in Romans 1:15, “So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.” God inspired this account and used Luke as the human penman to give us vivid details of how carefully He governs in the circumstances of life. While this account provides a historical perspective of sea-faring practices in that day, it also provides us a powerful illustration of how God uses Christlike believers in the daily affairs of the ungodly.
