John the Baptist was in prison. He had preached and prepared the way for Jesus Christ as he had been called of God to do. When he first saw Christ, he declared publicly, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) However, as he sat in prison awaiting execution, he began to wonder if his preaching had been in vain. John sent two of his followers with a question for Jesus. “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” Jesus graciously responded to John’s question with a message highlighting the visible proofs of His deity—His mighty works. As the followers of John returned with this message, Jesus began to preach a sermon to the Galilean crowd that had been overhearing this interaction. He challenged the crowd about the person and message of John the Baptist and why they had not accepted it. Jesus then declared a message to that audience that still rings true for us today. He began with a plea for people to have ears to hear and concludes it with an invitation that everyone should accept.
Matthew 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
